JAL will launch “JAL SMART AIRPORT” at 11 new airports (Aomori, Sendai, Komatsu, Hiroshima, Izumo, Matsuyama, Nagasaki, Miyazaki, Amami Oshima, Miyako, and Shin-Ishigaki) in sequence from July 3.

JAL SMART AIRPORT is a renewal of the design and system from the check-in counter to the boarding gate in order to reduce waiting time for various procedures. It is already in operation at nine airports in Japan (Haneda, Itami, Shin-Chitose, Centrair, Fukuoka, Oita, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, and Naha).

At the 11 new airports, the check-in and baggage drop-off lines will be improved, and baggage exchange voucher issuing machines, which are used at Centrair and other airports, will be introduced. Baggage tags issued by the self-service check-in machines are scanned by staff using a bar code reader and an exchange slip is issued, significantly reducing waiting time.

In addition, digital signage will be installed above the check-in counter, and a “Special Assistance Counter” will be set up exclusively for pregnant women and passengers with small children who require assistance.
