The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has announced the design of five regional license plate designs with new regional names. Pre-applications will be accepted from around April, and the plates will be issued from around May.

The five regions announced this time are Tokachi, Nikko, Edogawa, Azumino, and Minami Shinshu. In addition, Inakadate Village in Aomori Prefecture has been incorporated into the “Hirosaki License Plate” region, and will begin issuing license plates with the regional version of its design.

In addition to the issuance fee, a donation of 1,000 yen or more can be made to select a full-color version of the license plate. The donation will be used to improve local transportation services and promote tourism in the area where the license plate is introduced. If no donation is made, a monotone license plate will be issued.
