Utsunomiya Zoo opens “Sol,” a black leopard, to the public for acclimation. Only 9 animals in Japanese zoos.

Utsunomiya Zoo (552-2 Kamikanei-cho, Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture) announced on January 7 that it will welcome a black leopard on December 4, 2024, and that the animal is currently undergoing acclimation.

The black leopard has melanism, a rare trait among leopards and jaguars, and is kept in only nine zoos in Japan.

The black leopard kept at the Utsunomiya Zoo is nicknamed “Sol”; he is a male born on September 27, 2019 and is from Hamamatsu Zoo. He is currently coming out to the exercise area more often after 3:00 pm in the evening.
